What is G-7?
G-7 is a group of the world’s richest and most advanced economies.
At 50 years old, it should be strong and united, but the recent summit in Kananaskis, Canada, showed the opposite.
Why the G-7 Summit Failed
Major global problems were discussed:
Russia-Ukraine war
Israel-Iran tensions
Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza
G-7 could not give a strong response.
The group also failed to handle the U.S. tariffs that disrupted global trade.
Problems Before and During the Summit
Canada, the host, had unexpected elections just before the summit.
Mark Carney’s new government was still settling in.
PM Modi and other leaders were invited only a few days before the summit.
U.S. Foreign Policy Confusion
Donald Trump, the U.S. President, changed direction on many issues:
Tried to bring Russia and China into the G-7 (calling it “G9”).
Changed position on Ukraine.
Refused to criticize Israel; instead, blamed Iran.
Trump’s early exit made things worse.
G-7 could not agree on a final joint statement.
Only a Chair’s Summary was released, with statements on less controversial topics like:
AI and quantum computing
Wildfires
Minerals
Transnational repression (TNR)
India’s Limited Gains
PM Modi’s best moment was meeting PM Carney of Canada.
Both agreed to restore High Commissioners between India and Canada.
But Canada did not change its stand on:
The Nijjar case
Khalistani extremism
Hidden Targeting of India
The G-7's TNR statement did not name any country.
But it clearly referred to Canada’s claims against:
India
China
Russia
Iran
Should India Keep Attending G-7?
The Indian government should think again.
Sending the PM over 11,000 km for a small outreach session may not be worth it.
The summit was disorganised and unproductive.
